    Dear Misters Rostron, Senior and Junior, using the e-mail address on the magnet left when our furnace was installed, I sent the following letter only for it to be returned as undeliverable. Judy was kind enough to provide the correct address. Below is the mail we hoped you would have received first thing this morning:

    Dear Mr. Rostron, Sr. and Mr. rostron, Junior, we are overwhelmed! As senior citizens, we have had years of dealing with businesses. Often it felt like our problems were neither comprehended nor handled accurately, respectfully, or timely. We have grown a bit jaded, tending to think the term ‘customer disservice’ was more appropriate.     Dear Mr. Rostron,

    On a very cold winter day this past January on an early Friday morning I awoke and realized the temperature in this house was unusually cold. I went down to the cellar and heard the furnace making very strange sounds and it clearly was not heating the house. For a number of years we have had a service contract with Sears covering the furnace and a number of other appliances. About 8:00 a.m. I called Sears for service, anticipating sometime on Friday a technician would arrive. I was told the earliest possible date would be Monday. That meant all Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and probably all of Monday we would have no heat, and a major winter storm was expected.

    Several years ago one of your technicians installed a humidifier on our Sears furnace, so I decided to call your company for help. Within an hour, a technician arrived and we concluded a new furnace was needed. In addition, an immediate need was heat. Your personnel arranged to have four portable heaters brought over right away, and between them and our fireplace we were able to keep most of the house livable for the next four days while a new furnace was installed. In addition to purchasing a new furnace I decided to replace our old air conditioner and that too was installed in subsequent weeks. Both the furnace and the air conditioner have performed flawlessly in the extremely cold winter we had and the exceptionally hot summer we are experiencing. We have two engineers in our family and they both have inspected closely the quality of the installations of these units and concluded it was a first class job. I will add our bill for electricity has also dropped sharply.

    Having taught for 35 years at the Rutgers Business School I am particularly sensitive to how businesses are operated. From my point of view you are an excellent business person, and if I were still teaching I would invite you to come to one of my classes as a guest lecturer. From a simple installation of a humidifier several years ago, my contact with your company grew to a major residential installation this past year. You and your staff are to be congratulated.

  • An Immediate Difference
    A letter from Richard F. Schmidt detailing the improvements an energy audit with Tom Rostron brought him

    In October 2008 we contracted with your company to have a home energy audit performed. I had been interested in doing this for some time, having seen the procedures on This Old House and other home shows. The technician did a very thorough audit and was at our home for a full day. Your report came back in a timely manner and revealed that we need “air sealing” and additional insulation. A new hot water heater was installed as was a new chimney liner. The insulation contractor you referred us to did a great job as well.

    Almost immediately, we noticed a difference in the comfort of the home. Drafts and cold spots were gone and the furnace rarely cycled on. We even lowered our thermostat from 70 to 68 degrees and were still satisfied. Our initial utility bills have dropped as well. Over time, I will have a better estimate of the savings.

    We are anticipating a 20% rebate toward the cost of the work from the NJ State Energy Savers program. I have always been satisfied by the service your company provides. I thank you and your company for a job well done.

  • About a year ago I had Tom Rostron do an NJ home performance package in my home. This package included a new high efficiency furnace, A high efficiency AC unit and a professional sealing off all the drafts and energy leaks in my home. They were courteous professional and on time through the entire process. They were not the cheapest around, but I chose them because I believe you get what you pay for and had heard some bad things about other companies doing the same work. It was worth every penny as there have been no issues to date. They explained to me the correct way to do the installation to ensure that the job was done correctly. Finally, I have seen a reduction in my heating and cooling bill of approx. $150 a month which is the best thing. I highly recommend taking the time to get an estimate from Tom Rostron. We were in full panic mode at the thought of no heat, and no backup heat sources, during a blizzard in a house with 4 children that weekend. Clearly it was unsafe for anyone to be on the road but via telephone John walked us through a series of steps to determine our damper wasn't functioning properly, therefore our system wouldn't turn on. He gave us a safe, temporary work-around (we opened the damper manually and just left it open) to get the heat to turn on. Once weather conditions permitted, we scheduled a service call and John was our technician that day too. He was just as pleasant, congenial and efficient in person.

  • John H was great. He assisted me over the phone in relighting the water heater and the next day arrived to assist with a faulty program in the thermostat. I appreciate all of the time he took. His service was five stars. Especially since was able to talk me thru the problem on the phone and at my house for no charge. We are fine with Tom Rostron's service in general but the furnace they installed was expensive and not very modern. We upgraded as part of a state and federal energy saving program however, the unit is inefficient as per the rating system on its sticker and needs service often. We will likely need more good technicians to assist in the future.
